And here we are, the last day of the fair. Yesterday was show day for beef. Hattie started off strong with reserve champion showman in 8-10 division. Addison won champion showman for 11-14, and Olivia and Tillie took their turn with the heifers in showmanship. Addison was 3rd in class with Hattie and Lucy winning it. Hattie went on to win champion Hereford female and 5th overall female.
Another busy one in the books. Today is the last day, whoo hoo! - Abby Young
National Junior Hereford Expo in Grand Island. Here is how our week went. Both girls participated in showmanship. Addison didn’t make it out of her heat. The girls placed 4th with Lucy and 3rd with Dream Girl in their classes .
Hattie accepted an award for placing 3 in Photography with her “Hereford Pedicure” picture.
Finally, the girls placed 4th with Lucy and 3rd with Dream Girl in their classes .
Both girls participated in the Judging contest and pen-to-pen where they met kids from other states. Addison made it to Semi Finals with her Individual Sales.
Hattie made it into Semi Finals and then the Finals. No top 10 this time, but we are over the moon proud of her.
The Illinois Fitting Team celebrated with an ice cream treat from Simon. He was such a great mentor.
Hattie was the PeeWee representative for Illinois in the team fitting contest. They didn’t place, but they had a great time and she built more confidence, learned new skills, and built some great friendships.
The amount of teamwork and love the girls put into this week was amazing. To say we are all exhausted is an understatement. We are grateful for our village both at home and on the road that help us along the way and don’t mind our circus. A big photo dump of the week’s happenings.

It’s been a wild 72 hours. Thursday night we had a EF1 tornado go through east of Lexington. The results of the storm left us with a mess of trees down, but we were lucky to still have power.
Friday morning the crew headed to the Illinois Hereford Preview Show. Hattie and Addison competed in the fitting contest. Hattie had champion Peewee and Addison took reserve champion in the Junior division.
Saturday was busy with showmanship. All of the girls competed including the 2 littles who couldn’t wait for their time to take the halter. Hattie did outstanding, but didn’t place. Addison was reserve junior showman behind a fierce competitor and outstanding showman. Tillie and Olivia took the ring by storm and viewed their mentors as assistants. Olivia was bummed they didn’t pick a champion or reserve, but regardless the experience was great. Next, Addison showed the bull in the bred and owned show and then gave her Sales Pitch to a panel of judges. We ended the evening with a banquet and both girls received recognition for their Prospect Awards. Today Addison and Hattie showed their heifers. Addison didn’t fair as well as she had hoped, but Hattie made up for it by winning her class. She then took reserve division and ended up placing 4th Overall Horned Heifer. We are grateful for the opportunities we have with the Hereford cattle as well as the relationships and friendships we have made. Yale and I both couldn’t be more proud of the girls and their hard work ethic.
Thank you buyers of our lots in the February 2024 Show and Sale! YCC Forrest selected Reserve Grand Champion Horned Hereford Bull.
Addison's experiences are paying off as she is a part of every aspect of Young Cattle Company. From sire selection to breaking calves and vaccinating, she doesn't mind getting her hands dirty.
